I admire you for digging into data, and if I had the time, I could find different data using the same data sets to refute most if not all of your points so to say that writing "you get what you pay for" might be "completely misguided at worst," well, is a bit perfunctory at best.

There are many independent groups that rate states on the services they provide to their citizens and their reports on Nevada are uniformly abysmal. But maybe there is a fundamental difference in how people view these ratings? Perhaps some people would rather live in a state that provides top notch services--something that is less important for others for various reasons?

All of these state services should be measured using many forms of assessment (quantitative as well as qualitative).

For instance, Measuring Up 2008 provides a very balanced view of higher ed by state using several key indicators: http://measuringup2008.highereducation.org/states/report_cards/index.php?state=NV

One of the most alarming measures for Nevada is that of affordability. This means that the cost of higher education, based upon what percentage of their income families must pay, puts it out of reach for many. In this case, the Millennium Scholarship becomes a necessity for most. And on this indicator, the state keeps failing, year after year.

I use Measuring Up as an example of watchdog groups that publish various reports the confirm what cursory views of census data, DOJ data, OES data, ACS data, NCES data, DOE data, etc. show.

So while I agree that throwing money at a problem is never a great solution, it's usually part of a great solution.

I enjoyed reading your post very much!

Answering 1....

No. At least, not that I've ever noticed. Of course, there's a difference in "Tomboy" and "so butch they could grow a penis any second"... Although I believe the latter would equally frighten men and women.

To be fair, Rick Warren is not as fire and brimstone as Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwell. While he still holds views I disagree with, he is more like the Jimmy Buffet of Evangelicals. I do seem to recall that he actually received heat for inviting Obama to speak at his church and he is trying to expand his movements reach beyond gays and abortion and to tackle poverty and the enviroment. I do get a lot of amusement out of watching the far left howl at this. Obama said he wanted to reach out to people who disagree with him. I guess they either weren't listening or just assumed he was insincere.

I digress of course. Yes, Boris Johnson is awesome if simply for the fact that he is fun to watch. I believe he rides his bicycle to work everyday. When was the last time you saw the mayor of New York or L.A. or Reno do THAT? He is also symbolic of the Tories rediscovered ability to be elected. That the Conservative Party won the mayorship of London, previous held by a devotee of Mao, speaks volumes.

I am glad to hear about the turnout at the meeting! I've been to Washoe Flats, the spicy chicken wings are the most reasonably priced item....maybe the only reasonably priced item. I think I can make the first part of the next meeting but will have to leave for class after twenty minutes. It sounds like things have made a promising start. I have voter rolls for some of Lyon County, I could bring the Libertarian names if you wish.

While we are on the topic of resurrections of seemingly dead creatures...

Our first meeting went well. Nobody got in a fight. However, the ale I drank made me sick. Hopefully I can get Coors at the steakhouse.

We are looking for political candidates and a campaign team that can put Libertarians in office.

We also like to show off our Libertarian Party membership cards.

I am also suggesting that we photograph this event and put the pictures on our website for the benefit of all lurkers.

I'm with you on the original - the '70s Battlestar Galactica was rather campy, to put it gently. There are times when I'm in a mood for it, but, for the most part, I just don't get terribly excited about it.

The new BSG, on the other hand... yeah, I'm all over that like white on ranch. It's meandering a bit these days, which is unfortunate, but I definitely like the concept and think that, overall, it's pretty well executed. Let's be honest - when 99.999% of your civilization is brutally killed, it's not going to bring out the absolute best of what's left and there's not going to be many chances for vengeance. The new BSG does a wonderful job of capturing that, IMHO.

Your mileage, however, may vary.

I'm not from your area - but your thoughts largely follow the paths mine have taken in the last few years. Well, your thoughts on this, at least. I know nothing about cars.

I'm in North Carolina, but I will be glad to support your efforts in any way I can. Just say the word, let me know what I can do.

The U.S. system (of winner take all single member Congressional districts and the Presidential Electoral College) is not conducive to a multi-party system. The U.S. has always been a 2 party system with the Federalist vs. the Democratic Republicans, the Whigs against the Democratic Republicans and finally the Republicans vs. the Democrats. Sure, once in a while there is an independent candidate that gains some traction, but how many of these have won the Presidency? None.

This is a big reason why the LP and every other minor party have failed to gained traction.
